An adult male pedestrian was hit and killed by a light-rail train about 6 p.m. Sunday as he tried to cross the tracks at 42nd Street and Hiawatha Avenue S. in Minneapolis, a spokesman for Metro Transit said.

Spokesman John Siqveland said the gate arms were down, an alarm was sounding and lights were flashing at the intersection when the accident happened. The sidewalk is adjacent to the gate arms, but is not covered by the gate arms. The southbound train stopped just a few feet beyond the intersection after the accident.

Several passengers were on the train at the time. They were questioned by Metro Transit police and put on a bus to continue their journeys, Siqveland said.

The victim's name was not released. The Hennepin County medical examiner will do the autopsy.

Metro Transit police were investigating the accident, including crash reconstruction, on Sunday night. The rail safety division of the Police Department also will look at data from the train and the rail line regarding gate arms and signals.
