A man who died while in custody of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office las week had led state troopers on a chase from Shakopee to Richfield.

Gerard Andrew Ryan, 48, of Minneapolis, died around 10:30 p.m. Saturday while at Hennepin County Medical Center, the medical examiner said. The examiner did not cite a cause of death "pending additional investigation and toxicology testing."

Ryan was booked into the Hennepin County jail shortly after midnight Friday on charges of fleeing police. There also had been warrants out for his arrest on charges of driving under the influence of controlled substances, jail records showed.

According to the State Patrol, Ryan was driving a 2004 Ford F250 pickup at high speed with only temporary plates visible when a trooper attempted to stop him around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Ryan had run a red light and fled northbound on Hwy. 169 from the area near Canterbury Park.

Officers deployed stop sticks in the area of Hwy. 169 and Valley View Road, which Ryan hit, blowing a tire. Driving on three tires and a rim, Ryan hit another set of stop sticks near Crosstown Hwy. 62 and Portland Avenue. Ryan eventually stopped on southbound Cedar Avenue just south of the Crosstown, said Sgt. Jesse Grabow.

A MnDOT traffic management camera showed Ryan getting out of his pickup and being surrounded by state troopers, a K-9 from the Bloomington Police Department and officers from Edina.

Ryan was arrested and taken to the Hennepin County jail on charges of felony fleeing police in a motor vehicle and an active warrant, Grabow said.
