The rash of motorcycle fatalities continues in Minnesota, the latest occurring when a rider ran into an SUV making a turn at a Brainerd intersection, authorities said.

The crash happened about 2:40 p.m. Monday at Washington and 3rd streets NW. and killed a 30-year-old Brainerd man, according to the State Patrol.

John D. Helstrom died in the collision with an SUV. The patrol said Helstrom was not wearing a helmet. The SUV driver, David J. Dale, 56, of Hillman, Minn., was not injured, the patrol said.

The westbound SUV was turning left from Washington onto 3rd Street and was hit by the oncoming motorcycle, the patrol said.

Helstrom is the sixth person on a motorcycle to die in a crash in less than two weeks in Minnesota, according to the state Department of Public Safety. The year-to-date total stands at 13, one more than last year, the DPS added.

Five of those killed since May 29 were not wearing a helmet. In Minnesota, only motorcyclists under 18 or with instructional permits are required to wear a helmet.
