A woman drove her sport-utility vehicle through a stop sign in rural Scott County, her mind wandering as she listened to a song, and struck a car in the intersection, killing a passenger in the other vehicle, authorities said Friday.

Killed in the collision, which occurred on July 20 northeast of New Prague High School, was passenger Mae Ann Schoenbauer, 83, of New Prague, said Sheriff Kevin Studnicka.

Schoenbauer, who was wearing a seat belt, died Monday at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.

Her husband, Lawrence, 83, was unhurt. So was the other driver, Kaylee M. Johnson, 27, of Elko New Market, the sheriff said.

Johnson was heading east on County Road 2 and failed to observe a stop sign. She struck the Schoenbauers' car as it was heading north on Drexel Avenue (Hwy. 15) with the right of way, the sheriff said.

Johnson told deputies that she was "listening to a song that reminded her of a friend's wedding and the next thing she's going through the intersection, not realizing the stop sign," Studnicka said. "She hit the brakes, and it was too late."

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said of the couple. "It's very unfortunate for the family."

The sheriff said charges are pending against Johnson, but he doubts they'll rise to a felony, given that no drugs, alcohol or grossly negligent driving appears to have been involved.
