Powderhorn neighborhood residents can help determine what kind of July 4 celebration will be held in Powderhorn Park this year by taking a survey, or by attending the neighborhood association board meeting Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at 821 E. 35th Street.

After fights and other disruptions at last year's events, Minneapolis Park Police determined they could not adequately patrol both the Powderhorn fireworks and those along the riverfront in downtown Minneapolis, which attract a massive crowd.

So the Powderhorn board is weighing three options:

1. A smaller fireworks event at Powderhorn on July 4, moving the big one downtown to July 5, which this year would be on a Saturday;

2. A daytime-only event on July 4, without fireworks, but with music and food, or

3. Moving the Powderhorn celebration with its traditional fireworks to July 5.

The board is expected to vote on an alternative at 7:30 p.m. during the monthly Community Cafe meeting.

July 4 fireworks have been a tradition in Powderhorn Park, some say, for more than a century.
