A 27-year-old man who allegedly prompted an Edina elementary school to go into lockdown last week after he burglarized two nearby homes and fled into the school was charged Tuesday.

Jacob Scott Heald of Bloomington was charged with two counts of second-degree burglary, a felony, and remains in the Hennepin County jail.

According to the criminal complaints, police were called to the 4700 block of Wilford Way about 8:30 a.m. Jan. 22 after a woman returning home saw Heald leaving her front door. She confronted him, and he returned an iPad he had taken from her home and ran from the scene.

A few minutes later, police got a call from a woman standing outside Countryside Elementary who had seen Heald knock on windows and the door of a house across the street from the school before entering the garage, the complaint said. She then saw Heald walk by her in the school hallway, entering and exiting the school quickly.

He was arrested soon after on a probation violation after being convicted last month of stealing a vehicle. Police confiscated an iPad, a laptop, a keyboard and some coins. Heald told police he needed money to support his meth addiction.

Countryside Principal Karen Bergman told parents in a message last week that the school is reviewing its safety protocols after the incident.
