A 59-year-old man died after he was knocked off his motorcycle by a deer as he drove down a western Minnesota highway on Saturday.

Philip Borstad, of Appleton, Minn., was riding his Harley Davidson west on Hwy. 7 in Big Stone County a little after 8 a.m. when the deer ran north out of a ditch and, in mid-air, hit Borstad, knocking him off the bike, according to the State Patrol.

The motorcycle came to a rest on the right shoulder. Borstad was taken to Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske said that while there have been fatal motorcycle crashes involving deer from time to time, he wasn't immediately aware of one happening in the same manner.
