Three St. Paul teenagers have been charged with first- and second-degree murder in the shooting death of a West St. Paul man in his driveway in January.

Donovan Michael Diego, Christino Andres Rosario and Malik Jamal Alize Farmer were charged in Dakota County District Court on Friday in connection with the murder of Luis David Reyes-Galvin, 31. Diego was 18 at the time, Rosario 16 and Farmer 17.

Under Minnesota law, anyone who is 16 or 17 and charged with first-degree murder is prosecuted in adult court.

According to a news release from Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom, the three defendants went to Reyes-Galvin's home the evening of Jan. 11, armed with guns they'd taken in a burglary in West St. Paul the day before, intending to burglarize the home and rob Reyes-Galvin. They knocked on the door, but when no one answered, they waited in a nearby vehicle. Reyes-Galvin arrived with his 10-year-old daughter and 12-year-old nephew, parked his car and walked toward the home with the children.

The daughter told investigators she saw two men approaching her fathers, one from each side, carrying guns, and that she and her cousin went inside. Reyes-Galvin turned and confronted the men, a fistfight broke out, and two or three shots were fired. A neighbor reported seeing a dark-colored SUV leaving the scene.

Reyes-Galvin was shot in the left shoulder, and the shot exited from his right chest. He was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he was pronounced dead.

A grand jury will be convened to review the case, as required by law in any case involving first-degree murder charges.
