A slight warm up is supposed to arrive just in time for the opening weekend of the St. Paul Winter Carnival and Red Bull Crashed Ice in downtown St. Paul.

That should make it a good weekend to watch skaters zoom down the ice track that towers over the capital city or take in the parades and other events that are on tap as part of the 127th "Coolest Celebration on Earth."

Of course, with large scale events, there will be some traffic disruptions with road closures and bus detours.

Those include several streets in the vicinity of the St. Paul Cathedral, site of the starting line for the Red Bull Crashed Ice races. Those include parts of Dayton, Summit, Marshall, College and Selby Avenues, parts of John Ireland Blvd. and Old Kellogg Blvd.

Access into St. Paul on Kellogg Blvd. will remain open, but look for brief closures as police stop traffic to allow shuttle buses carrying athletes to cross at Mulberry Street. Those brief delays will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

In downtown St. Paul, the Securian Winter Run 5K, 10K and half marathon runs begin at 8 a.m. and run until noon. Look for parks of Kellogg Blvd., Jackson Street and streets around Rice Park to be closed.

The King Boreas Grande Day Parade steps off at 2 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m. The route follows W. 7th Street from the Smith Avenue High Bridge to Rice Park.

Metro Transit routes in downtown St. Paul will detour on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.:

Routes 3, 16, 62 and 94

Buses on Wabasha, Cedar or Minnesota will travel on their regular routes but only north of 6th Street. During the detour, there will be no service south of 6th Street on those routes.

Route 67

Southbound Route 67 buses through downtown will travel on 5th Street, Minnesota, 7th Street, Hwy. 52, Plato Boulevard and Wabasha. Board southbound buses on Cedar Street at 6th Street (Macy's).

Northbound Route 67 buses will travel on Wabasha, Plato Boulevard, Hwy. 52, 7th Street, Robert Street, 6th Street and Wabasha before returning to the their regular route. Board northbound buses on Wabasha at 6th Street (Macy's).

Metro Transit routes in downtown St. Paul will detour on Saturday, Jan. 26, due to Winter Carnival events.

These detours will be in effect from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.:

Routes 21, 54, 61, 63, 64, 70 and 74

Buses that normally travel east on 5th Street and west on 6th Street will instead travel on 7th Street in both directions between 5th Street (Xcel Energy Center) and Wall Street.

In addition, routes 54 and 74 that normally travel on West 7th Street between Smith Avenue and 5th Street (Xcel Energy Center) will instead travel on Smith Avenue to 5th Street between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Customers should board at marked temporary bus stops on 7th Street between Wall Street and "Old 6th" Street (Dorothy Day).
