Ponder inconsistent in team drills Quarterback Christian Ponder had some highs and a lot of lows in Tuesday's practice. He was nearly picked off by linebacker Erin Henderson on the first play of 11-on-11 team drills.

Later, linebacker Chad Greenway and safety Mistral Raymond both broke up passes that nearly were intercepted. Both passes were intended for tight end Kyle Rudolph, a popular target. Vikings defenders now sense the pass is coming.

On the other hand, Ponder also threw a perfect deep ball down the right sideline to receiver Jerome Simpson. Simpson got a step on cornerback Antoine Winfield, caught the ball over his left shoulder in full stride and outran Winfield and safety Harrison Smith for a touchdown and the highlight of the day.

CAMP PROFILE

Marcus Sherels

Position: CB/punt returner

The skinny: Went from long-shot tryout hopeful during the team's 2010 rookie minicamp to a reliable punt returner who has played in 17 NFL games with three starts at cornerback.

Did you know? The former standout at Rochester John Marshall High School and the University of Minnesota wants to attend law school after his NFL career is over.

Chances of making the team: He's on the bubble, at best, as he battles Zack Bowman, Brandon Burton and Reggie Jones for probably two corner spots behind Chris Cook, Antoine Winfield, Chris Carr and Josh Robinson.
