A 31-year-old man has been convicted and sentenced to a lengthy prison term for fatally shooting a woman who interrupted him as he burglarized her north Minneapolis apartment.

Jurors needed less than five hours Tuesday to find Gregory A. Davis, of St. Paul, guilty of first-degree murder in the daytime killing of 21-year-old Brianna C. Jones on Dec. 22, 2011.

Davis shot Jones once in the left temple at close range as she entered the lower-unit apartment in the 1500 block of Emerson Avenue N.

Jones' boyfriend found her body and called police. Davis had been dating the boyfriend's mother.

"It's always sad when a young person has her life cut short," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement, "but this one was made worse by the fact that it was in her home, where she should be safe."

Davis also was found guilty of being "a prohibited person" in possession of a firearm, according to the county attorney's office.

Davis was immediately sentenced to life in prison and will be eligible for parole after serving about 30 years.
