SAUGATUCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Officials say a Chicago man who stopped to assist at the scene of a western Michigan crash was hit and killed along with a motorist from Wisconsin.

The crash happened Thursday night along a stretch of Interstate 196 in Allegan County's Saugatuck Township that was slick from sleet and snow that had fallen.

The Grand Rapids Press reports (http://bit.ly/1gM1DfI ) the first crash happened when 21-year-old Jared Kavinsky of Hartland, Wis., lost control and hit a median barrier. Before rescuers arrived, police say 62-year-old Terrence Noone of Chicago stopped.

Police say they both were fatally struck by another vehicle. The 26-year-old Michigan driver of the vehicle that hit them was hospitalized.

The crash is under investigation. The roadway was partially closed near the accident scene for several hours as crews responded.
